"Physicist Axel Mellinger travelled 26,000 miles and pieced together over 3,000 individual images to create this, one of the most stunning panoramas of our galaxy every assembled.

Piecing together 3000 individual photographs, a physicist has made a new high-resolution panoramic image of the full night sky, with the Milky Way galaxy as its centerpiece. Axel Mellinger, a professor at Central Michigan University, describes the process of making the panorama in the forthcoming issue of Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. An interactive version of the picture can viewed on Mellinger's website.
"This panorama image shows stars 1000 times fainter than the human eye can see, as well as hundreds of galaxies, star clusters and nebulae," Mellinger said. Its high resolution makes the panorama useful for both educational and scientific purposes, he says.
Mellinger spent 22 months and traveled over 26,000 miles to take digital photographs at dark sky locations in South Africa, Texas and Michigan. After the photographs were taken, "the real work started," Mellinger said.
Simply cutting and pasting the images together into one big picture would not work. Each photograph is a two-dimensional projection of the celestial sphere. As such, each one contains distortions, in much the same way that flat maps of the round Earth are distorted. In order for the images to fit together seamlessly, those distortions had to be accounted for. To do that, Mellinger used a mathematical model-and hundreds of hours in front of a computer.
Another problem Mellinger had to deal with was the differing background light in each photograph.
"Due to artificial light pollution, natural air glow, as well as sunlight scattered by dust in our solar system, it is virtually impossible to take a wide-field astronomical photograph that has a perfectly uniform background," Mellinger said.
To fix this, Mellinger used data from the Pioneer 10 and 11 space probes. The data allowed him to distinguish star light from unwanted background light. He could then edit out the varying background light in each photograph. That way they would fit together without looking patchy.
The result is an image of our home galaxy that no star-gazer could ever see from a single spot on earth. Mellinger plans to make the giant 648 megapixel image available to planetariums around the world.

As many of you may know, I am in a Day of Defeat (classic) clan. Two of our clan members recently had their accounts phished right from under their noses. I thought that I would forward you this information so you can better protect your beloved Steam accounts. Here's what happened to my friends:

They reported getting an instant message (via Steam friends) from one of their friends saying that there was a way to get free Steam games. The message included a link. They clicked on the link and gave their account information.

Now I know what you're thinking: they just gave their information to a website they didn't know? They should know better than that!

It's not quite that simple; you see, I clicked on the link when one of my clan mates (hacked at the time) sent me the same message. The website looks EXACTLY like steampowered.com. I mean the borders, buttons colors and everything. It's practically an exact replica of Valve's website. Of course I knew something was afoot, so I did not give the website my information.

If your account has recently been phished, hijacked or hacked, please visit the follow links to try to regain your precious account:

1. Create a "Support Account" with Steam. This is separate from your actual game account:

Sorry for not posting as often as I should. The college work load is hell and it's only getting worse each day. I'm finding it difficult to divvy my time between everything that needs to be done. But I'm sure you don't want to hear about my problems. No, I think that you want to hear about how someone produced an exact replica of a Laser Rifle from the Fallout universe.

There is a blog on the internet named Volpin Props. The owner of the blog makes all of these crazy replicas for his clients. (people that go to conventions, etc.) As it turned out, one of his clients needed a Laser Rifle for a Fallout convention that they were going to. Enjoy!

By the way, he also just finished a Big Daddy from Bioshock.

New info has been released suggesting that the events players choose to participate in will determine the state of outposts and npc aspects of the world. In this interview, Mike O'Brian states that an example of this dynamic world changing could be an outpost that constantly gets attacked by centaurs (sounds kinda like the Crossroads in Barrens)could be taken over by centaurs if they win, and the outpost will have to be liberated by human players for NPC's to respawn in there.
pause.com: What types of consequences might players encounter for acting (or not acting) at a given point along the timeline of an event? For instance, one of the examples you all gave is that a group of centaurs might attack a fortress, and you could join in with the guards in defending the fortress, or the centaurs might actually take it over. As such, are there things (loot, story elements) that players might never get to experience if they take out the centaurs before they ever get to the fortress, etc.? Or, if the centaurs take over the fortress and players help take them out to return the fortress to its rightful owners, is there any kind of “hero bonus” or anything like that that players will receive?
Mike O’Brien: We structure events so that players are never punished for playing the game, killing monsters, or winning events. We don’t want players to be saying, “hey everyone, please stop killing those centaurs; I need to participate in the event where we retake the garrison from the centaurs.” So there’s nothing you can get by losing to centaurs that you can’t get by winning.
pause.com: Finally, will NPCs such as guards at a fortress re-spawn if the centaurs have taken it over, or are NPCs just dead once they’re dead?
Mike O’Brien: If the centaurs take over the garrison, then they’ll hold it as a centaur garrison until the players can put together an attack force and successfully reclaim it. Once the players reclaim it, it becomes a human garrison again, and the NPCs move back in.

Fallout 3 DLC

The New Downloadable content from Fallout 3's creators has taken another step... in the same direction. Sure its fun, filled with several new side quests and fantastic new items, but a game changing experience? Don't think so! What Bethesda needs to do is make an entirely new game. They could modify their nice engine and churn out a better game. Fallout 3 has a strange essence of Fable 2's lack of combat motion, in conjunction with FPS qualities. It leaves something to be desired from normal combat... The majority of everything else is major multi-tasking. Which for most gamers, increases the learning curve by tenfold.

The best part of Fallout really is the story experience, and the exploration. All I'm saying is for Bethesda to refine the style of the game to fit a larger group of gamers and normal people alike. I'm great at articleing, arn't I?

DETROIT - An agent used surveillance cameras to confirm a smelly suspicion: Someone had been urinating in a freight elevator at an Internal Revenue Service data center in Detroit.

Authorities filed a criminal charge Tuesday against Michael Hicks. In an affidavit, treasury agent Delmaria Scott said she interviewed Hicks in January 2008 and he admitted urinating in the elevator for months.

"It's pretty redundant to make laws outlawing texting while driving because it already falls under laws covering distracted driving, but holy crap, something needs to be done about it.

You have ridiculous cases like the Trolley driver rear ending another train because he was texting his girlfriend, and train conductors causing a 25-fatality crash because he was texting teenage boys telling them that they're "gonna run the locomotive."

There's two commonalities to these accidents. First is that texting while you're supposed to be paying attention and in charge of other people's lives is a bad idea. Second, guys seem to be intent on texting people, no matter how inappropriate the time, if it's going to get them laid.

But there's nothing better than an anecdotal account of how bad texting while driving is, courtesy of reader Trevor, who has been rear ended three times this year by people texting on their phones.

"Anyways, I live in Idaho. And everyone who lives in this state FUCKING SUCKS at driving. The last thing we need is people using their cell phones simultaneously, but of course I see everyone from the 15 year old girls to 50 year old guys typing out emails on their Blackberries. It sucks ass to have to deal with these fucking morons on a daily basis.

Anyways, on to the first incidence of getting hit:
I was driving through stop and go traffic outside of a high school moment after they got out of school, and I am completely stopped when I see a brand new Hummer H2 coming up on my ass at ferocious speed. I knew I was going to get hit, and right before he made contact, I was able to discern a fucking cell phone in his hands through my rear view mirror. The officer on the scene estimated he hit me going roughly 30mph, and had not even applied the brakes before hitting me. Completely totaled my beloved Toyota Tacoma, and gave me a wicked case of whiplash. By the way it was a roughly 17 year old guy driving his parents Hummer to school. Spoiled prick...

Second time was just 6 months later in the winter. It was a touch icy on the roads and I was stopped to make a left turn onto a side street and I look in my rear view mirror (after the Hummer incident I have been made paranoid about being hit), and see a little Dodge Neon moving way too fast towards me and start sliding sideways right into the back of my new truck. I jumped out and asked if she was ok, and the first thing she says to me is "Oh my god, I'm so sorry. I was texting and didn't even see you there until it was too late." This time the damage wasn't too bad, but I ended up being without my vehicle for 2 weeks, during which I had a shitty little rental car, so it still was quite the inconvenience.

Third time was about 3 weeks ago and I'm still feeling sore from it. I was sitting at a stop light and a big Ford F-350 with a huge trailer full of lawn mowing equipment plowed into me at about 25mph, once again totalling my vehicle, and absolutely wrecking my back. I felt like I got hit my a freight train this time. I had my foot on the brake, and he made my car skid forward so hard that I pushed the car in front of me into the car in front of him. An eyewitness to the accident said that the man in the truck was using a phone when he hit me, and it was just verified to me the other day that his phone record shows that he sent a text message seconds before the accident occured. At least this guy was able to apply a little bit of brakes before making contact, but still, I got hit really hard. I'm going to have to see a chiropractor, and I now am searching for another vehicle.

So yeah. That's my record for getting hit. It really sucks. I can't quite say I would mind the banning of texting while driving after all of this as I'm 100% sure at least somebody has lost their life in an accident caused by texting while driving. Hell, I used to do it before I got the iPhone which is fucking impossible to do without looking, but after seeing how poorly most others handle it, I can definitely understand why people are wanting this kind of a ban."

I don't know what we need to do about this, and encoding restrictions on devices themselves to not allow texting while moving is not the solution. I don't know what is.

They have been in coma lately but, through 53 years of history, Sony has created some of the most amazing gadget in history. Some of them changed the world forever. Here you have them all.

I look back in time and I can't help but wonder what the hell is wrong with Sony. Sure, they have had they share of disasters, like Betamax, but overall they always were a company breaking new ground and opening new product categories.

Some of their products, like the Sony Trinitron or the Sony Walkman, changed the way we understood TV and music. Their professional U-Matic and Beta video series did the same, democratizing movie and video production. The Playstation introduced 3D graphics in the gaming world in a big way, destroying the status quo, which at the time had Nintendo as its king. Even their transistor radios were groundbreaking, not to talk about their stunning designs in the past.

Today, their product designs are bland. And their technology, except for a few exceptions that have their replica from other manufacturers, is just me-too. No spark, no true revolutionary innovation. Just a giant, surviving in a world where other brands now carry the torch they had for decades.

Look at the timeline and marvel at all the "world's firsts" these people had. I'm sure you will have the same feeling.

Passenger lands turboprop plane after pilot dies

I just received my order of a Brother MFC-6490CW, a multi-function center by Brother!
It can scan and print an enormous 11x17" ledger! It's about a foot tall, and only weighs a couple pounds.

Plus I managed to get it for only $107! BWAHAHAHA.

It can scan in at a highest resolution at, get this, 19200x19200dpi. I. Am. Not. Kidding.
It's such a high resolution scan it tells me that my 4 gigs of ram isn't enough memory to scan at that res. But seriously, this thing is so amazing I want all of you people I don't actually know to come over to my house and eat my food just so I can show it to you >__<

Gametrack Freedom Brings 'Wiimote' to Xbox 360 this Fall

"The Gametrack Freedom (a Wiimote-like device planned for the Xbox 360 and PS3) has been redesigned since we last saw it, and in the meantime, it's been slated for Xbox 360 release this fall.

(A PS3 version could come sometime in 2010).

The Freedom is quite similar to the Wiimote in that it features a series of accelerometers for measuring pitch, yaw and roll, but the Freedom also uses two sensor bars set by the television for ultrasonic 3D positioning. Instead of IR, the controller emits sound frequencies measured by these sensors, which creates accurate controller triangulation but probably requires that the sensors be plugged directly into the console itself. (The Wii's sensor bar plugs in to the Wii, but it's really only an IR lamp.)

While we're sure the hardware is pretty solid at this point, the Freedom's success will depend on third party developer support and, of course, the small matter of price. But our interest is piqued." -Gizmodo

Taser X12 Stun Gun Freezes People From 88 Feet Away

There's a new stun gun called the X12. And it's pretty much a freeze ray without the ice.

The X12 fires a jolt through the air (wirelessly) through nonlethal bullets that can cut through clothing to paralyze a perpetrator within an effective range of 88 feet. Apparently this paralysis occurs without pain (though I wonder if that's a relative idea), meaning that freeze tag just got a whole lot more fun, though ever so slightly less fair.

Authorities will receive their first shipments of the X12 in June. The endless pranks will begin sometime thereafter.
